Sustainable September is a month-long exploration of sustainability in every form it comes in - even in the form of cakes!
I love a national month or awareness day... and what better than the environmentally friendly ones? It got me re-considering the impact For Goodness Cake has on the natural world and how I can reduce it further.
1. My cakes don't come wrapped in plastic.
I used recyclable cardboard cupcake boxes (still looking for good cupcake boxes which don't have a plastic window though...) and cardboard cake boxes and boards. If I do need some sort of wrap, I always use foil which can be recycled very easily.
2. Vegan customers (and therefore vegan cake) are my largest audience.
These cakes - obviously - have no dairy in them, which makes their carbon footprint that much smaller. Cows and dairy farming are significant contributors to global warming, so using non-dairy milk reduces this.
3. All my food waste is recycled via the local council's scheme.
Fairtrade (which in itself is beneficial to the environment in its way) banana skins, pistachio shells, strawberry tops... in it all goes!
4. My home and business base is powered by a green utilities supplier - find yours here!
Also, on an energy theme, I try to use the oven just once a day, often baking my cakes just before putting the dinner on to save re-heating the oven.
5. I deliver and also shop (where possible) locally...
... doing all my errands and cake deliveries in one hit, reducing the need for individual trips. My brother has an electric Mini, which I am insanely envious of, but for now, my super unleaded Corsa will have to do. Could be worse... could be better!
6. All my recyclable waste is put in our recycling containers.
From empty plastic jars of coconut oil to glass jam jars, I make sure everything I can recycle is recycled. Thanks Monmouthshire Council!
The protection of the environment is a very important aspect of my life and I am proud to have established a relatively 'green' and thriving business.
If you're after more environmental awareness weeks or days, take a look here!
Happy Sustainable September!
For Goodness Cake
Today is Earth Day, which highlights how you can make a change to your life to help the planet.
I'd like to share with you what For Goodness Cake does to help reduce its impact on the environment.
I've always been pro-eco, and always looking for more ideas to 'green' my business some more, so let me know if you think of any more!
🌎 Recyclable cardboard cake boxes
🌎 A large portion of my cakes are for vegan customers. Sure, there's no meat in cake (unless it's a chocolate bacon bundt!) but a vegan lifestyle has a smaller impact on the planet.
🌎 No clingfilm - ever!
🌎 All my food waste is recycled via the local council's scheme - banana skins, pistachio shells, strawberry tops... in it all goes!
🌎 A green utilities supplier - find yours here!
🌎 Bananas are always Fairtrade - often good for the environment as well as the producer
🌎 Delivering locally and combining journeys in a non-diesel vehicle
🌎 Shopping local (and small) for my fruit and veg - yep, veg, haven't you tried my lovely sweet potato brownies yet?!

Maybe you're allergic to eggs? Maybe you're vegan? Here are the best egg replacements for baking.
Bananas are our top ingredient for baking where eggs would like to be. We use Fairtrade bananas every time - the boss can recommend the banana coconut recipe we have, it's Louise's favourite! Our Banana Cake is award winning too, so it must work!
Aqua-what?! This is the juice in a can of chickpeas. Weird, huh? You just need to whip it up with a bit of cream of tartar. It's best when you just need egg white replacer, not the yolk. None of our recipes use aquafaba, but it does work, despite the doubting face you're wearing right now!
Don't go putting this in your cakes, but tofu is a great egg replacer in savoury items like quiches. Just make sure the pieces are chopped up nice and small, and you'll never know they are there.
...or Peanut Butter - now we've got you! None of this weird tofu / aquafaba, thank you! Nut butter is just lush in cookies in particular. And the jar? We like our Skippy BIIIIIIG. Have a go!
This goes ingredient great in our low fat banana cake - an old, old recipe for years back, but it's still a winner.
We use avocadoes in our go-to vegan / gluten free chocolate cake - again, it's mashed up really well to prevent any green lumps being visible. No, you can't taste it!
Happy egg-free baking!

Can cakes change the world? We believe it can!
I've had a challenging day, so I am determined to end the day on a positive, right here! Making the world a better place is a challenge for us all, from global leaders to making-small-changers. Cake is fab, we all know that, but bear with me while I tell you why our cakes are making the world just that little bit better.
60% of our cakes are vegan
Vegan diets are not everyone's cup of (non dairy milk) tea. Sure, animal rights may not be everyone's priority, but a plant-based diet has deeper implications than that: There's the wider environmental issues like soil erosion, climate change, and deforestation that a heavily meat based diet can exacerbate. Having a healthy planet should be top of our lists. We, and our grandchildren, will have no other home!
Enjoying a more plant-based diet can have a significant impact on our footprint on the planet, from creating less greenhouse gases, to the amount of pressure we're putting on our natural water resources. Vegan cakes can help here, as, among other animal product ingredients, they don't contain dairy milk or butter. Intensive dairy production is known to be environmentally detrimental, so the more vegetable based alternatives we can find here, the better.
Have you tried our vegan carrot cake? Our plant powered Victoria Sponge? Find out more here about our popular vegan cakes.
With hundreds of recipes, you'd be in safe hands if you order a vegan cake, like 60% of our customers do.
Our banana cakes are Fairtrade
The Fairtrade movement ensures a fair price is paid to farmers in developing countries. From coffee to chocolate, cotton to tea, so many Fairtrade products are out there... Including our very own award winning banana cake!
Right now, you can get 15% off banana cakes for Fairtrade Fortnight, so drop us a line quoting FAIR18 and we'll deliver right to your door.
Cake brings happiness
There's no denying, a good cake shared with a friend can make your day. We have hundreds of recipes, all wanting to be tasted by you, so why not share a smile with someone today, over a piece of home baked cake?
After all, changing the world needn't be only about the big campaigns and movements. Bringing some happiness to someone's day is all part of being human and making the world a better place.
Have you tried our Sweet Temptation range yet, inspired by your favourite sweets?
How about our low fat / low sugar '280 Skinny' range? You know, we even run a 'guilt free' baking workshop showing you how to make some of these 'healthier' cakes!
Have I missed anything? Are there other ways that cake makes the world a better place? Let me know in the comments below!
Our Destiny and Louise went to the Bristol Viva Vegan Christmas Market this weekend, and did they nail it? Yes they did!
Take a look at the amazing cakes the ladies took with them... and consequently sold to many, many hungry vegans! Everything from stewed plum cupcakes to gluten free gin and lemon cake, mince pie shortbread to a boozy Christmas cake - we had it all.
If you see anything you like here, we'd be happy to bake anything for you again if you couldn't make the event - just contact us!
That was our final event for 2018, but we are starting to book on events for next year, so stay tuned for more information!

So, you've tried our cakes, but you want to know more. "Show me inside 280 Bakes HQ!!!" I hear you cry! Consider your request filled...
Well, we're incredibly local - if you're from Portishead or Bristol! Our HQ, where all the orders come into, is in Lawrence Weston, over near Avonmouth and the M5, just down the road from Blaise Castle. Lucky us!
280 Bakes started with one domestic oven in one woman's (our Louise) own kitchen, and that's where the business has grown from. All our bakers are based in Bristol, all baking from their own 280 Bakes (and soon to be Council) approved kitchens, and delivering all over the region.
Behind the scenes at 280 Bakes
Have you tried our award winning Fairtrade banana cakes yet? When the bananas are put into the mix, Louise puts the sticker from the peel on to her fridge in 280 Bakes HQ's kitchen, partly as a reminder to buy Fairtrade again, but also to celebrate how many Fairtrade banana cakes we've been making for you guys!
Throwback Note: See that old school 280 Bakes magnet? That's a relic from when the company first started up 22 months ago, testing the waters with cake porch sales! #CompanyHistory, or what!?
We hope you've enjoyed that mini tour of the 280 Bakes HQ kitchen. If you have any questions, feel free to ask away using the comments box below - we' love to hear from you.

This weekend saw the return of the Goram Fair at Blaise Castle Estate, Bristol - and we were there with our home baked cakes!
The wet weather didn't put off Bristol families as they splashed through the fairground and stalls at the community event at Blaise Castle on Saturday - most, it seemed, stopping at our cake stall! Check out some of the delicious bakes we had for sale: gluten free, vegan, standard recipe cakes, Fairtrade cake, boozy bakes... We had it all.
We'd like to give a special mention to this guy, a father of a vegan who was particularly sceptical about the concept of vegan cakes. No eggs, no butter, no milk... How could that taste good? So, we gave him a cake to try, and he devoured the cupcake, almost whole. In his (tongue in cheek) words, "Wow, that does not taste like broccoli AT ALL!"
Glad to be of service - hope to see you again, sir!
The Team @ 280 Bakes
So, we've baked hundreds of cakes for you guys, but which are our all time favourite orders? Let's find out!
Birthday cakes are regularly ordered by our customers, and these two are our favourite so far. Emma (who's since left our baking team *sad face*) made the Cookie Monster cake, which hit the nail on the head for Steve's 40th - he loved it! The Chicken Cake was baked by Debbie, who was tasked with a poultry theme for a leaving do in Lawrence Weston. Still makes us laugh, when we see this clever, cute cake!
We are known for our home baked cakes, so no 'top cakes' blog would be complete without some of our traditional loaves and rounds appearing. You can't beat a Victoria Sponge for when the family pops over for the afternoon (available on CakeOD, our same day delivery service), and but our award-winning Fairtrade banana cake comes a close second - always popular at our events too, perhaps because it's low fat. What a cake!
As far as cupcakes go, we've done some amazing baking and decorating. Two that really stick in our minds, though, are our marshmallow cupcake and the ones we did themed on Aero chocolate bars. The marshmallow ones were for a customer's 40th birthday. The cakes were a surprise from his colleague and you should have seen his eyes light up - marshmallows are his favourite! The Aero cupcakes were a inspirational bake from Louise last weekend at the Viking Invasion event we went to. They came out particularly well, we think.
Both these cakes were Louise's. She used to dread doing cupcakes, but now has got really into the swing of them - even bought some new nozzles the other week for more design capabilities! Stay tuned to see more photos of her scrumptious cupcakes on our newsletter.
We've a good name for being vegan cake specialists, and, as 65% of our customers are in fact vegan, we aim to please! These two cakes are our best selling vegan cake, all home made of course, from scratch. You won't catch us using a cake mix any time! Here's our no.1 best seller, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake (as featured on the Bristol Food Tour), and our vegan Carrot Cake. Just yum!
These are both available for a non-vegan diet too, but why not give them a try? Not only are they 'cruelty free', having no animal products in them, they are consequently better for the environment too!
And finally, let's bring in some gluten free cake to complete our top ten. We often get gluten free requests, from coeliacs and friends of gluten intolerant people, and we can bake vegan gluten free too - skills! These two are Chocolate Hazelnut Cake (as seen on Made In Bristol TV) and, a family favourite, Lemon Cake. And, as a bonus, we offer a low sugar lemon cake, too, if you're trying to cut down.
That's our top ten favourite cakes! What do you think? Would you add anything to the list?
Don't forget, all our cakes are available for standard, vegan and gluten free diets. Just drop us a line to order yours!
